Housed in the iconic Duquesne Brewing bottling facility on Pittsburgh’s South Side, Velum Fermentation boasts one of the city’s largest flex spaces, complete with picnic tables and games. The 35,000-square-foot brewery opens its doors to the community for events, festivals, and fundraisers. Velum Fermentation operates with a 60 BBL DME system, four 60 BBL fermenters, and one 30 BBL fermenter featuring a variety of styles and some great experimental creations.
Co-owners Nate McLaughlin and his sister-in-law, Jenna McLaughlin, opened Velum Fermentation in April of 2023 to great excitement by the South Side and beer community. They chose the name Velum based on the look and sound, but acknowledge its definition as a semi-transparent paper, as well as the veil of a mushroom, which they incorporated into their branding. The two are proud to have established Velum Fermentation in Pittsburgh both for the impressive beer scene, but also to be close to family.
